God Will Carry You: The Truth About Overwhelming Trials

One of the most widely misinterpreted teachings in Christianity is the idea that God won’t give us more than we can handle. Many well-meaning believers misquote 1 Corinthians 10:13, assuming it means that God will never allow us to go through more than we can bear. But that verse is about temptation, not suffering. The truth is, God absolutely will give us more than we can handle—so that we remain fully dependent on Him.

When I believed this false teaching, life often felt unbearable. I would cry out to God, “Why do You think I can handle all this? Because I really don’t feel like I can.” The weight of trials crushed me, and I felt like I was failing as a Christian, and as a mom because I couldn't carry the burden. But that belief was never biblical to begin with.

There was a time in 2017, during my time in a discipleship ministry, I went around asking everyone, “Where in the Bible does it say God won’t give us more than we can handle?” Over and over, they pointed me to 1 Corinthians 10:13, and every time I responded, “That’s not it! That verse is about resisting temptation.” They would assure me THAT was it. But I kept searching for the right verse, only, I never found it—because it doesn’t exist.

The Bible never promises that we won’t experience suffering beyond our limits. Instead, it tells us His grace is sufficient and His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

And I know this truth firsthand. I know what it feels like to get so low that you believe there's no way out. Not once, but twice, I made a plan to end my life. I was exhausted. I couldn’t see a way forward, and I was convinced that everyone would be better off without me, including my kids, especially my kids. But both times, God stopped me. He intervened in ways I could never have imagined, reminding me—even in my darkest moments—that He was still there.

At the time, I didn’t understand why He let me stay. I didn’t see the purpose in my suffering. But now, looking back, I see that He was writing a testimony of His power, His mercy, and His grace. There were moments I didn’t think I could go on, but He carried me. And because of that, I am here to tell you—He will carry you, too.

If God never allowed us to face overwhelming trials, we would never need Him. We would never experience the depths of His sustaining power, His peace that surpasses all understanding, or the miraculous ways He carries us through. It is in our brokenness that we truly surrender, and in surrender, everything changes.

If you are in a season where life feels like too much, take heart. You were never meant to carry it alone. You were never meant to “handle” it in your own strength. Instead, let go, surrender it all to Him, and watch how He moves in ways beyond anything you could imagine.

A Prayer for Those Struggling with Suicidal Thoughts

Heavenly Father,

I lift up every person reading this who feels overwhelmed, hopeless, or unable to go on. Lord, You see their pain, their tears, and the burdens they carry. I ask that You wrap them in Your loving arms, remind them that they are not alone, and fill their hearts with Your peace. Speak life into their weary souls, Lord. Let them know that their story is not over and that You have a purpose for their life.

Father, silence the lies of the enemy that whisper despair and defeat. Fill their minds with Your truth—that they are loved, cherished, and never beyond Your reach. Give them strength for today and hope for tomorrow. Show them the light in the darkness, and place people in their lives who will encourage and support them.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
