The Dragonfly: A Symbol of Transformation and Freedom

If you’ve explored my work through Broken4Breakthrough, you’ve likely noticed the dragonfly woven into so much of what I share. It’s not just a beautiful creature; it’s a powerful symbol of our walk with God—a reflection of the journey we all take when we choose to leave behind the old life and step into the new one He has prepared for us.

The life cycle of the dragonfly is extraordinary, and it resonates deeply with the transformation God brings into our lives. Let me share why this remarkable creature holds such significance and how its journey mirrors our spiritual walk with Him.

Born into One Life

The dragonfly begins its life as a nymph, living beneath the surface of the water. It’s a world it didn’t choose—a place of survival where it’s armored and shielded from predators. For us, this parallels the life we’re born into, filled with the challenges and circumstances that shape us. We carry wounds, lies, and fears, often unaware that this is only the beginning of our story.

The Conscious Decision to Leave

One day, the nymph must make a life-altering decision: to leave the water and step into the unknown. This decision is permanent—there’s no going back. For us, this moment comes when we choose God. It’s the moment we say, “I will leave behind the old life to follow Him.” It’s not easy, and it requires faith to step out of the familiar and into the unseen.

The Wandering Phase

After the nymph leaves the water, it doesn’t immediately take flight. Instead, it wanders, still carrying the weight of its old life—the armor that once protected it but now hinders its freedom. How often do we, as believers, do the same?

Even after choosing God, we carry the burdens, lies, and fears that defined us in our old life. We may be armored up with defense mechanisms that once kept us safe but now hold us back from fully stepping into the freedom Christ offers.

Breaking Through

The dragonfly’s breakthrough comes when it realizes it no longer needs to carry the weight of its old world. It doesn’t need the armor that once protected it. Instead, it discovers that all along, it had something far greater: its wings.

For us, the breakthrough comes when we surrender the lies, fears, and burdens that no longer serve us. We break free from the chains of our past and step into the truth of who God created us to be. We discover the freedom that was always there, waiting for us to embrace it.

Born to Be Free

The dragonfly’s wings were with it all along—it just needed to walk the path to discover them. The same is true for us. God created us to live free, to soar, to reflect His glory. When we fully embrace His truth, we realize we were never meant to carry the weight of our old life. Instead, we are called to fly, to live in the fullness of His promises.

Why the Dragonfly Matters in My Work

The dragonfly reminds me—and I hope it reminds you—that transformation is possible. No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve carried, God’s plan for your life is one of freedom, renewal, and purpose.

It’s a journey. It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it. When you choose God, you step into a process of breaking through the lies and discovering the truth of who He created you to be. You are not defined by your past. You are defined by His promises, His love, and His plan for your life.

So, every time you see a dragonfly in my work, let it be a reminder: you were born to fly. You were born to live free. The journey might take time, but with God, you will discover your wings—and when you do, the sky is the limit.
